A wide gravel pullout on the inland side of the highway, far enough from Big Sur village that the light dome drops off, with a clear southern horizon over the ridgeline. From roughly May to September the galactic core sits above the coast between midnight and 3am. Park nose-out so your headlights do not blind anyone when you leave. It is legal to sleep here. Bring a red light, and expect fog to roll in with no warning about a third of the nights.
